The Wise Latina

Order in the Court!  Finally, a move to ensure justice and order in our country.

Yesterday, Judge Sonia Sotomayor was sworn in as an Associate Justice of the Supreme court.  She is the 111th Justice of our nation’s highest court.  Of those 111 judges, there have been only four who were not white and male.  Order in the court indeed: it is high time that our highest court more closely resembled our population at large.  As for being a role model for minorities, women especially, Justice Sotomayor will be  a crucial element.  As Marian Wright Edelman said,  “You can’t be what you can’t see.”

Justice Sotomayor’s words from a speech in 2001, i.e. “a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life”, has now been turned into a battle cry for equal representation and consideration of all colors, religions and genders of Americans.  Her upbringing, top-notch education and 17 years on the bench afford her a sea of experience that no other Justice over the Supreme Court’s last 100 years can claim.  Wise?  Absolutely.  Latina?  Proudly.  If it pleases the court, congratulations are in order for Justice Sotomayor and our entire country.

I disagree 100% with this lady being made a member of the Supreme Court.

I applaud the first Latin Justice, it is long overdue in my humble opinion.

I agree that her educational credentials are impressive, and I agree that as an overall package she doesn’t suck.

I have a huge problem with any justice being a Politico, and she is no different. She is the Left wing version of John Roberts.

I have a huge problem with your comment about her being better prepared/skilled than any other Justice of the past 100 years. I would point out Ginsberg, Scalia, and Thomas just to name 3.

I hate the fact that over the years the Supreme Court has been politicized. This does a huge disservice to the nation, when you factor in the lifetime appointment and issues with impeaching a Justice. Check out my blog for what I wrote about her.

I know you are a liberal, maybe not far left, but you lean that way. That’s fine but a Justice should serve ALL THE PEOPLE regardless of political/religious views, and I really do not think we have that right now in the Supreme Court.

All the Sotomayor appointment accomplished was to solidify the Washington political power structure.
