Welcome Back!

Life just gets better and funnier.

So Qatar won the World Cup venue for 2022.  All the newscasters are pronouncing Qatar as “Kotter”.  Isn’t it pronounced “Kahtar” with the accent on the second syllable?  All I could think of was the television series, “Welcome Back, Kotter”:

To hear these professional announcers saying, ever so casually, “Kotter”, just had me on the floor.

Another funny but very pathetic development was the vote taken today by the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform for deficit reduction.  The Commission needed 14 votes out of 18 to achieve a super majority and move the plan through Congress.  It failed, with only 11 voting for the measure.  Yet, this 60% vote in support of the measure is impressive.  Nevertheless, isn’t it ironic, and so typical of our government that revels in NOT taking any meaningful action, that while both parties are spouting off on the need for deficit reduction, the GOP refuses to repeal the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest and the Democrats insist on extending the unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed.  How do these policies advance deficit reduction?  Giving the rich a pass on taxes coupled with the continuation of benefits for the unemployed are both deficit raisers.  Such garbage.  Could the truth be that both parties are maneuvering their agenda solely for the sake of political gain and re-election?  Could their pledge to reduce the deficit be simply another obstructionist move to get our President to be a one-termer?  The hypocrisy is so blatant that the only response is to laugh.

Then there is Senator McCain, who I swear has dementia, and his opposition to the repeal of DADT.  Faced with the identical opinion of the Pentagon and the majority of Americans that DADT needs to be thrown by the wayside, he has now resorted to a delaying tactic rather than a complete condemnation.  Knowing that all the interested parties have reached the same conclusion, McCain is going for the “now is not the right time” argument.  What a desperate character.

Anyway, those are my pearls for the weekend.  As I have said numerous times past, life is the best entertainment ever.  Who needs fiction?

And a big welcome back to Brownies Chrisetta and Sabowtage.
